Deirdre Burnett

Deirdre studied sculpture at St. Martins School of Art and then took a BA in ceramics at Camberwell College of Art.  She makes individual vessel forms in oxidised stoneware and porcelain.  Mostly wheel thrown, turned and altered, although large floor standing pieces are hand built.  Volcanic, reactive or colour surface qualities come from oxides and materials thrown or laminated in the body.  Alternatively from slips and glazes, which react to each other, not simply glazes applied to the surface.  All the glaze effects are controlled accidents, chemical reactions held fossilised by heat control.

Deirdre’s work is found in many private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia; The Sainsbury Collection, Norwich.  She can also be found on the Crafts Council Index of Selected Makers and is a fellow of the Craft Potters Association.
