THE GALLERY

The Gallery, owned by potter John Bedding, former apprentice and then assistant to Bernard Leach for a period of almost 10 years, is considered one of the principal galleries in the South West - and beyond. It brings together high quality ceramics, both for domestic use as well as work for the collector. The gallery enables visitors to view works by local potters as well as leading potters of international status, past and present. .

St Ives Ceramics is delighted to announce our upcoming exhibition in the gallery of new works by potters David Frith and Margaret Frith. The show runs from September 10th to October 1st 2011.

David and Margaret met at Stoke –on – Trent School of Art where they both studied under Derek Emms. They decided to set up their own workshop in North Wales in 1963 and have been working together ever since. This extremely talented couple have well established careers. David is known for his exploration of the thrown form creating impressive, individual large scale pieces in reduced stoneware. Margaret focuses on functional wares using her own porcelain body with glazes to fit the low expansion body producing amazing carved open bowls and jars, as well as making decorative stoneware pieces. Both potters experiment with reduction and oxidised firings working with wax motifs and masking, playing with iron rich glazes and heavy overglazes with the added benefit of wood firings giving their pieces a new and different dimension.

David and Margaret have also spent time working in Japan and found that inspirational, giving them an insight to the different attitudes, subtleties and ideologies between the two different cultures. The influence of the East and West aesthetic is clearly visible in their work and the reduction fired stoneware and porcelain pieces share in a tradition which started in the Orient centuries ago. Bernard Leach, considered to be the “grandfather” of studio pottery brought this tradition of high fired ceramics to the UK where it has since flourished. Potters such as the Friths continue to keep this tradition alive today while pushing their materials to new limits.

Fellows of the Craft Potters Association; David is also a selected member of the Crafts Council. Their work can be found in many private and public collections and they exhibit widely in the UK and abroad. David has also lectured overseas and given workshops in Europe, Africa and New Zealand. They also give workshops from their studio in the market town of Denbigh.

This exciting exhibition will feature 97 pieces individual pieces including platters, bottles, ginger jars, store jars, as well as pressed and extruded dishes.
